The speed of a Universal or DC motor may be controlled using a chopper circuit. This circuit uses a single switch and a free wheeling diode. The motor voltage is varied using pulse width modulation.
An IGBT and soft free wheeling diode are ideal for 220VAC applications. Lower voltage applications can utilize power MOSFETs.
